Tuesday, January 17

Some days are good news / bad news type days.
I'll have to think about the good news part. Hmmmm....
Nope. Not much.

I'm sure everyone has their long lists of grief, too.
It is easy to wallow in self pity.
Although, it is not very comforting.

"I" before "E" except after "C" or "L" or "W" or ...

I can't speak for the other rugged mountain folk, so this is all me.
To make a short story long, today was just one of those days.
I was up before the snowplow, and slushed my way down the hill.
Half way across the prairie, the transmission started to slip.
It wouldn't shift into high gear, so I was limited to 35 or so.
But that made the engine race, and it was beginning to complain.
Just before I was about to become a victim of road rage,
I was able to turn off the highway and onto the road to my office.
Just then, I lost the power steering, and the engine stalled.
The burb rolled to a stop. Efforts to restart it were futile.
The battery was dead as well...

The part that I didn't know was that just across the street, lived a
tow truck operator who had been praying for work. After giving thanks,
he came outside and asked if I needed some assistance. I gave thanks, too.

We looked under the hood. We tried a jump start. No good. Noticed that
the fuel filter was dry. Poured some gas directly into the carburetor.
It fired up, but had a bad sounding knock. We suspected it was a rod...
After being towed and explaining the what not, the mechanic gave thanks as well.

* Meanwhile, back at work, my new backup server was not functioning properly.
It's a SuperMicro dual Xeon 3.0 GHZ with 2 GB mem, 750 GB RAID-5 disk array,
dual Gigabit NIC, running RedHat Linux, Fedora Core 4, version 2.6.13. Cool.

Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the Exabyte VXA Tape Library.
Something about the onboard Adaptec dual-channel Ultra 320 SCSI RAID chip set
and the AIC79XX kernel drivers does not support the tape drive commands.
But I was told that if I downgrade the OS to the 2.4.29 kernel and load
the AIC7XXX_OLD driver instead, then everything will be ok.

About this time in a conversation, the RMW's eyes would be glazed over,
and the subject would be changed to just about anything else...

...like the weather.
