Friday, February 10

This is so rare, we just had to share it with you.
A sunset without a single cloud in the sky.

It's going to be a little chilly tonight.

That's ok. I'll be curled up in front of the fire,
watching the filtered and taped delay of the Winter Olympics.
By the time we see the opening ceremonies, the athletes
will be waking up for their first full day of competition.

And while I don't get all misty eyed with the idealism
of sport for the sake of sport, fair play, and world peace,
I do get a little choked up about all those multi-million dollar
endorsement contracts, and talk-show circuits awaiting those with
gold around their necks. Too bad if you "lose" and only get silver.
Sheesh. Have I gotten cynical, or what?

I remember watching the games in black & white.
Not to mention snow, static, and the lack of vertical hold.
If you knew just where to hit the TV, it would stay tuned
just long enough to watch the almost impossible double Axel.
Today, we have surround sound and a large screen.
And I'm already tired of that trumpet fanfare.

But when they play the national anthem,
I still well up with pride, and choke back a tear.
That's one tune I will never get tired of hearing.
